Candid free access for small nonprofits still exists, but it looks different from the Foundation Directory era. Candid search is a platform that combines nonprofit and funder data in one place. It replaced the older products, and the free routes now sit in specific places with specific caps. One of them is the Candid Gold Seal route, which turns a transparency badge into free Premium access for a year.

Foundation Directory Online was retired during 2026 and replaced by Candid search, so older guides that name FDO tiers describe a retired product (Rutgers University Libraries, July 20, 2026); whether Foundation Directory Online still exists covers the transition in detail. Candid launched Candid search on January 15, 2026 and released it to library and partner users on April 21, 2026 (Candid press release, January 15, 2026; Texas A&M University-Texarkana Libraries, August 31, 2026).

Quick Answer: How Does the Candid Gold Seal Give Free Premium Access?

A 501(c)(3) with annual revenue or expenses under $1M that earns a Gold Seal of Transparency or higher between January 5 and December 31, 2026 gets a free year of Candid Premium for 2 seats, claimed by December 31, 2026 (Candid Learning, read September 2026). A registered account and partner locations are the other free routes.

How Candid Free Access for Small Nonprofits Works Now

Free Candid access is a set of separate doors, not one free plan that covers everything. A free registered account opens a narrow slice. The Go for Gold promotion opens a free year of Candid Premium for qualifying groups. Most partner locations open subscription-level data on their own premises. Free filing sites open the underlying tax records without any Candid login.

Candid says "More than 90% of Candid's nonprofit users are small to midsize organizations, often with limited development capacity and little time for labor-intensive research" (Candid blog, January 20, 2026). Candid's own product page states Candid search covers "1.9M+ nonprofit profiles", "304k+ funder profiles" and "29M+ grants" (Candid search product page, read September 2026). Those figures describe the pool every Candid route draws on, with a different share of it visible on each.

The table compares the free routes at a glance.

What a Free Candid Account Opens for a Small Nonprofit

A free account is the fastest route to start, and it is also the narrowest. Candid states "Candid search is free for anyone who registers at candid.org" (Candid press release, January 15, 2026). Registration costs nothing. The trade is depth. The free tier is built for looking up a record you already know, not for building a long prospect list from scratch.

Candid's free tier gives "One per Month" full profile views, limited search results, limited personalized dashboards, the ability to claim and update an organization profile and the ability to earn a Seal of Transparency (Candid pricing page, read September 2026). That single full view resets each month. A team that spends it on the first funder it checks has no full views left until the next cycle. Candid says core information, "such as nonprofit profiles and IRS Forms 990", "remains accessible without registration or subscription" (Candid blog, January 20, 2026).

A practical split keeps the free account useful. Claim your own profile first, since claiming a Candid profile and earning a Seal of Transparency are free features listed on Candid's own free tier (Candid pricing page, read September 2026). Then use the monthly full view for the one prospect that matters most that month. Keep the rest of the prospecting in free public filing sources.

Our walkthrough of the full grant search covers the prospecting steps around those lookups.

The Gold Seal Route to a Free Year of Candid Premium Access

A Seal of Transparency is a badge that signals how much a nonprofit has shared about its work. Candid nonprofit profiles carry Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum Seals of Transparency, earned "by sharing information about its mission, programs, financials, leadership, and/or goals and metrics" (Candid blog, March 19, 2024). The Seal lives on your own profile. For smaller groups it also acts as a key to a free year of Candid Premium.

Candid's Go for Gold promotion states: "If your nonprofit's annual revenue or expenses total less than $1M and you earn a Gold Seal of Transparency or higher, you can receive a free year of access to 2 seats of Candid Premium" (Candid Learning, read September 2026). Candid's launch release says "small nonprofits with under $1 million in revenue or operating expenses will get access to Candid Premium when they earn a Gold Seal of Transparency" (Candid press release, January 15, 2026).

The dates matter because the offer is tied to a calendar window. To qualify for Go for Gold a nonprofit "must be authorized to provide information about a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose annual revenue or expenses is less than one million dollars and earn, at minimum, a Gold Seal of Transparency between January 5 and December 31, 2026" (Candid Learning, read September 2026). Candid states the Go for Gold offer "must be claimed by December 31, 2026" and that "Coupons are for new subscribers only, one-time use and are non-transferrable" (Candid Learning, read September 2026). A team already on a paid plan is not a new subscriber; what that plan costs is set out in the Candid Premium price guide and the Foundation Directory cost history.

Two practical terms are easy to miss. Candid states "Credit card will be required to process 100% off discount" and "(Please note: you must use a credit card in order to redeem the coupon.)" (Candid Learning, read September 2026). Candid states that organizations filing a 990-N "will need to reach out to us at GoforGold@candid.org to receive the coupon code" (Candid Learning, read September 2026). Groups that file the 990-N postcard should plan for that email as a separate step.

The financial part of the Gold Seal is lighter than an audit. Candid's 2026 Go for Gold page says to "upload your nonprofit's leadership demographics and either an audited financial statement or Form 990 / Form 990-EZ / Form 990-PF / Form 990-N," and adds that "Seals are earned in sequential order. You must earn Bronze and Silver prior to earning Gold" (Candid Learning, read October 2026). Work up through Bronze and Silver in the profile form, then add the leadership demographics and a Form 990 series return or an audited statement. Submit, confirm the Gold level shows, then claim the coupon before the December deadline.

Free On-Site Candid Access at Partner Locations

Partner access is the route for teams that need subscription-level data for a day without paying for a year. Candid's help center states: "we offer two ways to gain free access to Candid's subscription products", namely in-person access at partner locations and the Go for Gold promotion (Candid Learning, read September 2026). Candid said in July 2026 it offers free access "through over 2,180 locations across the United States" and that those locations "now offer free access to Candid search (available on-site)" (Candid blog, July 15, 2026).

Candid's help center states that at "Funding Information Network locations and most libraries, you will access the same depth and breadth of data that you would find in an individual subscription" (Candid help center, read September 2026). The same help center notes that an individual subscription includes features "not available in public access versions" (Candid help center, read September 2026), so ask the location whether you can save, export or print before you plan a long session.

Access is generally tied to the building, so build the shortlist on site and use the free account at home for lookups. Call the location before you travel to confirm which branch or computer carries Candid; the guide to libraries with Foundation Directory access explains how to find one.

Free Public Filings That Answer What the Free Account Cannot

Free filing sources answer the question the free account cannot: what did this funder actually give, to whom, and in what amounts. Three sources cover that ground without any payment. Each has a boundary worth knowing before you rely on it.

Grantmakers.io is free: "Research any US foundation in seconds. See their complete giving history, who they fund, and how much they give. Built from public 990s. Forever free." (Grantmakers.io, read September 2026). Two limits apply. Grantmakers.io covers Form 990-PF filers only, so community foundations, which file Form 990, do not appear there (Grantmakers.io, read September 2026). Grantmakers.io applies a free-use throttle: "As a free community service, we place limits on searches ... You have reached the hourly search limit." (Grantmakers.io, read September 2026). Work in short batches to stay under the hourly limit.

ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer is free and "includes summary data for nonprofit tax returns and full Form 990 documents, in both PDF and digital formats", last updated August 20, 2026 (ProPublica, August 20, 2026). It reads well for single-organization checks: open the profile, read the summary, open the full return when a number needs context. It is a quick way to confirm a revenue figure or an officer name before it goes into an application.

Candid's own free 990 route remains: "It's free to register for and try Candid search" and 990s "are available as far back as 2000" (Candid Learning, read September 2026). That depth of years helps when a funder page shows a thin recent record. An older return can show whether a grant program ran for years or appeared last spring. Use the three sources as a chain. Grantmakers.io gives the giving history for private foundations. ProPublica gives the readable return behind the history. Candid's free search gives the profile wrapper and the older years. The free foundation directory comparison sets these and other no-cost tools side by side.

Tracking Federal Deadlines While You Prospect for Free

Free prospecting still needs a calendar, because federal dates do not wait for a search upgrade. Foundation research can stretch across weeks. Federal windows close on the day stated in the notice. A small team that tracks only foundations will miss the federal side of the board.

Grants.gov is free and open for US federal opportunities (CASRAI guide, July 18, 2026), so a small nonprofit can track federal notices at no cost while it uses the free Candid routes for foundations. The grant calendar guide shows how teams keep both halves on one calendar.

Both halves can live on one board. GrantCue lists live federal, state and foundation grants beside a public directory of more than 10,000 private foundation profiles built from IRS 990-PF public filings (grantcue.com, September 2026), and its Free plan at $0 covers Grants.gov search and filters, up to 10 active opportunities, a kanban pipeline, fit scores and 3 AI NOFO summaries a month (grantcue.com pricing, October 2026). Adding the federal notices on GrantCue to that pipeline keeps them beside the funders you research through Candid's free routes.

FAQ

Is Candid Free for Small Nonprofits?

Partly. Candid states "Candid search is free for anyone who registers at candid.org", and that account gives "One per Month" full profile views plus limited search results (Candid press release, January 15, 2026; Candid pricing page, read September 2026). Paid-plan depth comes free only through on-site access at a partner location or, for 501(c)(3)s under $1M in revenue or expenses, a free year of Candid Premium through the Go for Gold promotion (Candid Learning, read September 2026).

Which Free Candid Route Suits a Long Prospect List?

On-site partner access. At Funding Information Network locations and most libraries, Candid says you get "the same depth and breadth of data that you would find in an individual subscription" (Candid help center, read September 2026), so a team with many names can work through them in one visit. The registered account's single full profile view a month suits one priority funder, not a long list (Candid pricing page, read September 2026).

How Should a Small Nonprofit Spend Its One Free Profile View a Month?

On the strongest prospect of the month, after the free filing sources have done the first pass. Grantmakers.io gives private foundation giving histories and ProPublica gives readable returns, so the full view goes to the funder where the Candid profile adds the most. Claim your own profile and start the Seal steps in the same session, and keep notes in one sheet so each lookup builds the list.

How Do I Get a Free Year of Candid Premium?

Earn a Gold Seal of Transparency or higher. Candid's Go for Gold promotion states that a nonprofit whose "annual revenue or expenses total less than $1M" and that earns a Gold Seal "can receive a free year of access to 2 seats of Candid Premium" (Candid Learning, read September 2026). The Seal has to be earned between January 5 and December 31, 2026, and the coupon claimed by December 31, 2026 (Candid Learning, read September 2026).

What Does a Candid Gold Seal of Transparency Require?

Shared information, not an audit. Candid's 2026 Go for Gold page says to upload "your nonprofit's leadership demographics and either an audited financial statement or Form 990 / Form 990-EZ / Form 990-PF / Form 990-N," and that Bronze and Silver must be earned before Gold (Candid Learning, read October 2026). Claiming the profile and earning a seal are free features (Candid pricing page, read September 2026).

Do I Need a Credit Card to Claim Free Candid Premium?

Yes. Candid states "Credit card will be required to process 100% off discount" and that "you must use a credit card in order to redeem the coupon" (Candid Learning, read September 2026). Organizations that file a 990-N have one extra step: Candid says they "will need to reach out to us at GoforGold@candid.org to receive the coupon code" (Candid Learning, read September 2026).

Is Free Candid Access Available in Pennsylvania?

The free routes are national. Go for Gold applies to any qualifying 501(c)(3) (Candid Learning, read September 2026), and Candid says over 2,180 locations across the United States offer free on-site access to Candid search (Candid blog, July 15, 2026), so look for the nearest partner location before you travel. For state-specific sources, see our guide to Pennsylvania nonprofit grants.

What to Do Next With Free Candid Access

Pick one route this week based on where the team stands. Groups under the size line should start the Seal steps now, because the coupon must be claimed by December 31, 2026 (Candid Learning, read September 2026). Teams with a long list of names and little time should book one partner session and work through the list on site. Teams with only a few named prospects can read those funders' returns in free filing sources today.

Keep the records from whichever route you use. Save the notes from each prospect and file the returns behind them. Put each funder's deadline on the same calendar as the federal notices, so neither side slips.
