Instrumentl vs GrantCue: which is worth paying for?
Instrumentl is the stronger tool for finding new foundation funders. GrantCue costs a fraction of it and covers tracking, deadlines and writing. Here are the real prices and where each one wins.
The short answer
- Pick Instrumentl if finding new private-foundation funders is the main job and you will use that every week. Its cheapest plan, Discover, is $299 a month billed annually ($3,588 a year) or $326 billed monthly, for up to 3 users.
- Pick GrantCue if you mainly need to track grants, deadlines, tasks and drafts, want a free plan, or cannot commit $3,588 before you know it pays off. Essentials is $49 a month ($39 billed annually) for 3 users, and the free plan costs nothing.
- Use a spreadsheet if you track a handful of grants alone. It is free and it works until the deadlines and the people multiply.
GrantCue makes one of these products, so check the figures yourself: they come from Instrumentl's own pricing page, as shown in a browser on October 6, 2026. Sources are at the bottom.
Instrumentl pricing per year (checked October 2026)
Instrumentl lists four plans. Its page shows one price per month when you pay the year upfront and a higher price per month when you pay monthly. Yearly totals are those prices times twelve.

GrantCue for comparison, from our own plan table:
Enterprise is custom. Annual billing is 20% off the monthly price. Nonprofits take a further 25% off with the code NONPROFIT at checkout. Full detail on the pricing page.
The tiers are not feature for feature. As a rough guide for three users, Instrumentl Discover is $3,588 a year and GrantCue Essentials is $468, a difference of $3,120. GrantCue Team (8 users, the proposal assistant, integrations) is $1,068 a year billed annually. What you give up for the lower price is described next.
What each tool does
Instrumentl is built around prospecting. Its pricing page lists 450,000+ funder profiles in its plan table and 37,000+ active RFPs on every plan, plus an AI prospecting assistant (labelled beta). Discover also includes pipeline tracking and task management. Pre-Award adds collaborators, calendar and CRM integrations, application forms and snippets, and an Award Assistant that reads deadlines from award letters. Full Lifecycle adds spend tracking against budgets, accounting integrations and onboarding.
GrantCue is built around managing the work once you have the opportunity. Discover lists live federal (Grants.gov), state and agency, and some foundation and corporate programs, with AI fit and readiness scores that show their evidence. You then run each grant through a pipeline with tasks, reminders and a calendar feed, summarize funding notices with AI, and draft in a writing workspace. GrantCue also publishes a free directory of more than 10,000 private-foundation profiles from IRS 990-PF filings that anyone can read without an account.
Where Instrumentl is stronger: foundation prospecting. GrantCue's directory shows what a foundation gives, but nothing yet matches your organization against it, and there are no saved foundation searches. If deep foundation prospecting is your main need, Instrumentl will serve you better. Its pricing page also reports ratings of 5.0 on Capterra and 4.9 on G2; we have not checked those.
Is Instrumentl worth it? An honest read
It is worth it when it finds funders you would not have found and you act on them. The test is arithmetic: at $3,588 a year (Discover, annual billing), one extra award a year that you would not otherwise have applied for covers it, and a team that writes to private foundations all year can clear that. It is not worth it as a place to keep a list of grants you already know about.
The mistake we see is buying a prospecting tool to solve a tracking problem. If your pain is missed deadlines, scattered drafts and nobody knowing who owns what, the funder database at the center of Instrumentl's price is not what fixes it.
A note on reviews: most "honest review" pages for software are written by a competitor or an affiliate, and this one is written by a competitor. Check ratings on Capterra and G2, and use the 14-day trial to test the one thing you are paying for.
Instrumentl grant tracking only: paying for what you use
Instrumentl does not list a tracking-only plan; its cheapest plan includes prospecting. If you want grant tracking without paying for prospecting, these are the options:
- GrantCue Free: one user, up to 10 active opportunities, a pipeline with core stages, tasks, deadlines, notes, comments and a calendar feed for deadlines. No card.
- GrantCue Essentials ($49 a month): 3 users, 75 active opportunities, saved searches with alerts, CSV import and export, and AI summaries.
- A spreadsheet: see the grant tracking spreadsheet template. Free, fine for one person and a few grants, and weak at reminders and sharing.
Instrumentl free trial and GrantCue's
Instrumentl's pricing page shows a 14-day free trial on each plan. Every new GrantCue workspace starts with 14 days of the Team plan and no card, then moves to the free plan with everything you saved kept. Either way, use the first week to check that the tool fits how your team really works.
Who should pick which
Many teams use both: a prospecting tool to find funders and GrantCue to run the grants they decide to pursue. More reading: Instrumentl alternatives, Instrumentl vs Candid vs GrantStation, and GrantHub alternatives.
