- Testing a Cheaper Alternative Before You Pay
A cheaper alternative to Candid is usually not one product. It is two or three smaller ones doing the parts of the job you actually pay for. Candid search merged Foundation Directory and GuideStar into a single platform in January 2026 (Candid press release, January 15, 2026), and its Candid Premium plan lists a nonprofit-discounted price of $219 a month billed monthly, or a starting price of $1,199 billed annually (Candid pricing page, read September 2026).
Free foundation directory alternatives built on public IRS filings cover the reading work at no cost; the paid layer is for filtering and curated opportunities. Each price here carries the date it was read, because subscription pricing moves.
Quick Answer: What Are the Free Foundation Directory Alternatives?
Free foundation directory alternatives in 2026 are Candid search's own free tier and its free on-site access at partner libraries, plus free 990 readers such as Grantmakers.io and ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer. Paid options under $300 a year include GrantWatch at $249, GrantLedger at $299 and GrantStation at $199 through TechSoup (vendor pages, read September 2026; TechSoup, updated September 14, 2026).
What a Cheaper Alternative to Candid Has to Replace
A cheaper alternative to Candid has to cover four jobs: find funders, read their giving history, narrow the list to your geography and issue, and get that list out of the tool. A tool that does three of the four sends you to a second login for the last one.
Candid search runs those four jobs over a large base. Candid's own product page lists "1.9M+ nonprofit profiles", "304k+ funder profiles" and "29M+ grants" (Candid search product page, read September 2026), and the launch release describes the platform as consolidating "data on 1.9 million organizations, 3 million annual grant transactions, and $180 billion in annual grant dollars" (Candid press release, January 15, 2026).
Candid's grants data is supplied partly by funders themselves through eReporting (Candid Learning, read September 2026), so a free tool built only on tax filings will not match it line for line.
The narrowing step is the hard one to rebuild for free. Paid Candid search filters by zip code and radius, affiliation type, IRS subsection, total revenue, total expenses, total assets, IRS form type, number of employees, total contributions, program service revenue, cash and equivalents, and investments and securities (Candid Learning, read September 2026).
Compliance reporting, which includes IRS Publication 78 data, Business Master File data and a downloadable compliance report, is available only on the Ultimate plan (Candid help center, read September 2026). Paid plans list unlimited search results and unlimited full profile views, and cap monthly downloads by plan (Candid pricing page, read September 2026).
An alternative that reads 990s well but cannot produce a filtered shortlist is a document viewer, not a research tool.
Free Foundation Directory Alternatives After Foundation Directory Online
A free Foundation Directory alternative in 2026 starts from the fact that Foundation Directory Online no longer exists as a product: Candid's Subscriber License Agreement lists "Foundation Directory Online (discontinued)," and Candid search replaced it (Candid, read September 2026). The free routes into the same data are Candid search at a partner library, Candid's free account and the 2026 Go for Gold promotion, and the free 990 readers covered further down this page do the rest.
Sources: Candid Subscriber License Agreement, Candid help centre, Candid Learning and Candid pricing page, read September 2026; Candid blog, July 15, 2026; Grantmakers.io and ProPublica, read September 2026.
The library route is the closest free match to the old directory, and it has two limits. Access is commonly on site only: Brooklyn Public Library states "This resource can only be accessed at Central Library" (Brooklyn Public Library, read September 2026). It may also not last everywhere, since one commenter reported that "a lot of places have been dropping Candid over the past year or two" (Reddit thread 1p511oo, read September 2026). The guide to Candid free access for small nonprofits walks through the library and Go for Gold routes, and whether Foundation Directory Online still exists sets out the transition dates.
Price Comparison of Cheaper Alternatives to Candid
Five published subscriptions have an entry tier below Candid Premium's nonprofit-discounted $1,199 billed annually (Candid pricing page, read September 2026), and four other research tools sit above it or publish no number at all.
Sources: Candid, GrantStation, GrantWatch, Kindora, CharityEZ, GrantLedger, Instrumentl, GrantForward, Clarivate and Grant Gopher pages read September 2026; TechSoup Support page, updated September 14, 2026; Grantsights price check, August 7, 2026, for the Instrumentl annual totals, which are twelve times the listed monthly prices and not figures Instrumentl publishes; CASRAI guide, read September 2026, for Pivot-RP licensing.
GrantStation is the clearest cut. TechSoup states that a one-year membership is normally $699 on GrantStation itself, that the offer is normally available on TechSoup for $199, and that TechSoup Plus members may request it for $150 (TechSoup Support, updated September 14, 2026). TechSoup ran a two-day promotion at $119 on September 15 and 16, 2026, described as full membership, not a trial or a limited tier, and that offer has now closed (TechSoup, read September 2026). TechSoup typically runs such a promotion twice a year (TechSoup Support, updated September 14, 2026).
GrantLedger publishes $299 a year and sets it against "Candid Premium (nonprofit)" at $1,199 in its own comparison table (GrantLedger pricing page, read September 2026). Kindora sells a Starter tier at $250 a year and a free plan it calls "Free forever" with unlimited funder browsing (Kindora pricing page, read September 2026).
Foundation Directory Alternatives Under $300 a Year
Four paid tools list an annual price under $300: GrantStation at $199 for a one-year membership through TechSoup, against $699 on GrantStation itself (TechSoup Support, updated September 14, 2026), GrantWatch at $249 a year, Kindora Starter at $250 a year for two seats, and GrantLedger Pro at $299 a year (vendor pricing pages, read September 2026). They cover different slices of the job. GrantStation and GrantWatch sell curated opportunities alongside funder profiles, while Kindora and GrantLedger search funder records built from IRS 990 data. For what the retired directory tiers cost and what Candid charges now, see Foundation Directory Online cost in 2026.

Free Alternatives to Candid Search and What They Miss
Free alternatives to Candid search cover reading filings and watching opportunities. For funder browsing beyond single filings, free options include Kindora's Explore plan, with unlimited funder browsing on one seat (Kindora pricing page, read September 2026), and Candid's own free tier, which limits search results and gives one full profile view a month (Candid pricing page, read September 2026).
Sources: Grantmakers.io, ProPublica, Grant Gopher, Kindora and Candid pages read September 2026; ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer last updated August 20, 2026; Grants.gov via the CASRAI funding database guide, July 18, 2026.
Grantmakers.io publishes its own limits. It covers Form 990-PF filers only, so community foundations, which file Form 990, will not appear (Grantmakers.io, read September 2026). It throttles free use and states "You have reached the hourly search limit" when you hit the cap (Grantmakers.io, read September 2026). The site says it runs on a budget of $200 a year and is fully open source (Grantmakers.io, read September 2026).
ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer fills that gap. It "includes summary data for nonprofit tax returns and full Form 990 documents, in both PDF and digital formats", last updated August 20, 2026 (ProPublica, August 20, 2026), which makes it the free route for the community foundations Grantmakers.io skips.
Candid keeps a free registered tier of its own: "It's free to register for and try Candid search", with 990s available as far back as 2000 (Candid Learning, read September 2026), and one full profile view a month on the free plan (Candid pricing page, read September 2026). Candid also offers free on-site access at over 2,180 US partner locations (Candid blog, July 15, 2026), and its published Premium figures of $219 a month and a $1,199 annual starting price are the "Nonprofit Discounted" rates, "Eligible to all verified non-funding organizations" (Candid pricing page, read September 2026; Grantsights, June 18, 2026).
One commenter on Reddit said "Propublica website has every 990 for free", and another called grantmakers.io "a good tool for playing around, but not a replacement" (Reddit threads 1wiivcd and 1sewng0, read September 2026). A third said "it's genuinely easier for me to look through pdf 990s manually than use Candid" (Reddit thread 1wcw9yl, read September 2026). Two free readers plus a state funder list make a working base, which our no-cost foundation directory roundup and private foundations by state list set out, and the free 990 search comparison takes the readers tool by tool.

Cheaper Instrumentl Alternatives and What Instrumentl Costs
Candid Premium, GrantStation, GrantWatch, Kindora, CharityEZ and GrantLedger all publish entry prices below Instrumentl's Discover plan, which is listed at "$299 /month" paid upfront annually, or "$326 paid monthly" (Instrumentl pricing page, read October 2026). That is $3,588 a year, twelve times the listed monthly price and not a figure Instrumentl publishes (Grantsights, August 7, 2026), against Candid Premium's nonprofit-discounted starting price of $1,199 billed annually (Candid pricing page, read September 2026).
The other published plans cost more: Pre-Award is $499 a month paid upfront annually or $579 paid monthly, Full Lifecycle is $999 a month paid upfront annually or $1,159 paid monthly, and Enterprise is quote-only (Instrumentl pricing page, read September 2026). An August 7, 2026 price check recorded annual totals of $3,588, $5,988 and $11,988, twelve times the listed monthly prices and not figures Instrumentl publishes, with user caps of 3, 5 and 15 (Grantsights, August 7, 2026). At the monthly rates, twelve months cost $3,912, $6,948 and $13,908, so paying upfront for the year saves $324, $960 and $1,920 (arithmetic on the Instrumentl pricing page, read October 2026).
A July 2026 price check reported that Instrumentl's official FAQ says its pricing is already its nonprofit pricing, and that Instrumentl publishes no second nonprofit discount (Grantsights, August 7, 2026). Every published plan carries a 14-day free trial (Instrumentl pricing page, read September 2026).
The plan names, Discover, Pre-Award and Full Lifecycle, point to a pipeline that runs past research into applications and awards (Instrumentl pricing page, read September 2026). A team that needs tracking in one system and can carry at least a four-figure annual line is the fit. A team that only needs funder profiles is paying for the tracking.
One commenter on Reddit set a retired Foundation Directory tier against Instrumentl's annual cost and argued "Both use the same IRS 990 data at their core" (Reddit thread 1sewng0, read September 2026). That tier is discontinued; Candid's own Subscriber License Agreement lists "Foundation Directory Online (discontinued)" among its services (Candid Subscriber License Agreement, April 25, 2025 page, read September 2026). Our Instrumentl alternatives page covers what to look for if you want the tracking without the price, and the Instrumentl comparison page covers its yearly pricing, its features and who should pick it.
Choosing a Candid Search Alternative Without Paying for Features You Skip
The right Candid search alternative is the cheapest published option that covers the job you actually use Candid for, so pick the job first and the tool second.
Sources: Grantmakers.io, ProPublica, Kindora, GrantWatch, GrantForward, Clarivate and Instrumentl pages read September 2026; TechSoup Support, updated September 14, 2026; GrantStation FAQ, read September 2026; Grants.gov via CASRAI guide, July 18, 2026; Candid pricing page, read September 2026.
Three tools publish no price at all. GrantForward sets its rate by institution size and asks you to contact support for a figure (GrantForward, read September 2026), and Clarivate describes Pivot-RP as a funding database "trusted by over 700 of the world's leading research institutions" without publishing a number (Clarivate, read September 2026). Pivot-RP is institution-only, so individuals cannot subscribe on their own (CASRAI guide, read September 2026). Grant Gopher publishes no price either, only what a Pro service includes and a contact form (Grant Gopher, read September 2026). Foundant's GrantHub is no longer a choice: trade sources report it was discontinued on January 31, 2026, and Foundant's site publishes no price for it (Grantsights, August 3, 2026; Foundant, read September 2026). Our roundup of GrantHub alternatives covers the replacements.
Seat counts change the comparison for a team. Candid Premium includes two user licenses (Candid Learning, read September 2026). Kindora's paid tiers run from 2 seats at $250 a year to 8 seats at $1,990 a year (Kindora pricing page, read September 2026), and CharityEZ lists one user at $497.50 a year and two users on both its $1,990 and $3,990 annual plans (CharityEZ pricing page, read September 2026). GrantWatch prices the same for an individual, a business or a nonprofit, and subscriptions can be canceled at any time (GrantWatch FAQ, read September 2026).
GrantStation behaves like a directory: its membership page advertises "150,000+ funding profiles, 15,000+ curated grants, and advanced search tools" (GrantStation membership page, read September 2026), and it accepts payment in full only, with no monthly option (GrantStation FAQ, read September 2026).
Combining Free and Paid Tools Into One Cheaper Alternative to Candid
A workable alternative costs less than one year of Candid Premium at its nonprofit-discounted $1,199 (Candid pricing page, read September 2026), and it needs one free 990 reader, one opportunity feed, and one place to keep the list.
Sources: TechSoup Support, updated September 14, 2026; GrantWatch FAQ, read September 2026; Grants.gov via CASRAI guide, July 18, 2026.
The stack works because the layers do different jobs. Reading stays free: Candid's registered search returns 990s as far back as 2000 (Candid Learning, read September 2026), and ProPublica carries full filings in PDF and digital formats (ProPublica, August 20, 2026). The paid layers buy curated opportunities and a filtered search window.
Where the stack costs you is time. The free readers show filings, not a ranked list, so a shortlist takes manual work: open a state list, open each funder, read the 990, write the number down. That is the trade you are accepting.
GrantCue can fill two of those layers at once. It lists live federal, state and foundation grants beside a public directory of more than 10,000 private foundations built from IRS 990-PF public filings, with a filter for foundations that indicate they accept applications, and its Free plan at $0 includes Grants.gov search and filters, up to 10 active opportunities and a kanban pipeline (grantcue.com and GrantCue pricing page, October 2026). Paid plans start with Essentials at $49 a month, or $468 a year billed annually, and a new workspace gets 14 days of the Team plan free with no card (GrantCue pricing page, October 2026), so it can be tested against the $299 stack above.
Commenters in three Reddit threads treated AI features as a reason not to buy a tool (Reddit threads 1wiivcd, 1vb5ctu and 1vydvxu, read September 2026), and one wrote "I am also sick of the AI integrations everywhere and for everything" (Reddit thread 1wiivcd, read September 2026). A moderator of a grants subreddit described the market as "an exhausting number of AI-powered prospecting solutions, just a wrapper for Chat GPT and a lame, barely populated database" (Reddit thread 1vb5ctu, read September 2026). If that is your read, start with the free tools.

FAQ
What Is a Cheaper Alternative to Candid?
A cheaper alternative to Candid is any tool that covers the research job you pay Candid for at a lower published price. GrantStation is $699 normally and $199 through TechSoup (TechSoup Support, updated September 14, 2026). GrantWatch is $249 a year (GrantWatch FAQ, read September 2026). GrantLedger is $299 a year (GrantLedger pricing page, read September 2026). Candid Premium's nonprofit-discounted starting price is $1,199 billed annually (Candid pricing page, read September 2026).
Is Instrumentl a Cheaper Alternative to Candid?
No. Instrumentl's Discover plan is $299 a month paid upfront annually (Instrumentl pricing page, read September 2026), which comes to $3,588 a year, twelve times the listed monthly price and not a figure Instrumentl publishes (Grantsights, August 7, 2026), against Candid Premium's nonprofit-discounted starting price of $1,199 billed annually (Candid pricing page, read September 2026). A July 2026 check also reported that Instrumentl's published prices are already its nonprofit prices (Grantsights, August 7, 2026).
What Is the Cheapest Way to Read Foundation 990s?
Free. Grantmakers.io reads Form 990-PF filings, describes itself as forever free, and applies an hourly search limit (Grantmakers.io, read September 2026). It does not carry community foundations, which file Form 990 (Grantmakers.io, read September 2026). ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer carries summary data and full Form 990 documents in PDF and digital formats, last updated August 20, 2026 (ProPublica, August 20, 2026).
Are There Free Alternatives to Candid Search?
Yes for reading filings and watching federal postings, and partly for funder browsing. Grants.gov is free for US federal opportunities (CASRAI guide, July 18, 2026), Kindora's Explore plan is free forever with one seat and unlimited funder browsing (Kindora pricing page, read September 2026), and Grant Gopher sends a free semi-monthly email with a sample of grants in your state (Grant Gopher, read September 2026). Grantmakers.io and ProPublica read the filings for free (Grantmakers.io, read September 2026; ProPublica, August 20, 2026).
What Do Cheaper Alternatives to Candid Give Up?
Mostly scale and filters. Candid search lists "304k+ funder profiles" and "29M+ grants" (Candid search product page, read September 2026), while GrantStation advertises "150,000+ funding profiles" (GrantStation membership page, read September 2026). Candid's paid filters include total revenue, total assets, and zip code and radius (Candid Learning, read September 2026). Grantmakers.io also leaves out community foundations, which file Form 990 (Grantmakers.io, read September 2026).
Which Foundation Research Tools Publish No Price at All?
Three do. GrantForward sets pricing by institution size and asks you to contact support (GrantForward, read September 2026), Clarivate describes Pivot-RP as trusted by over 700 research institutions without listing a price (Clarivate, read September 2026), and Grant Gopher lists only what its Pro service includes (Grant Gopher, read September 2026). Foundant's GrantHub is off the list because trade sources report it was discontinued on January 31, 2026 (Grantsights, August 3, 2026).
Testing a Cheaper Alternative Before You Pay
Run one full research cycle on free tools before you pay anything: read a foundation's 990-PF on Grantmakers.io, read a community foundation's 990 on ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer, and pull your state's funder list. If that produces a usable shortlist, nothing needs buying.
If it does not, buy the smallest window that tests the paid layer. GrantWatch sells a seven-day subscription for $22 (GrantWatch FAQ, read September 2026), a low-cost way to rerun the searches the free tools could not answer. Instrumentl's published plans carry a 14-day free trial (Instrumentl pricing page, read September 2026), and TechSoup's GrantStation promotions typically run twice a year, in spring and fall (TechSoup Support, updated September 14, 2026).
Write down which searches the free tools could not answer before you subscribe. That list is what you are buying, and the test of whether the subscription earned its price. The research steps that run on top of whichever stack you choose are covered in our prospecting walkthrough for nonprofits.
