Grant software without AI features is what some grant writers now look for. The reasons commenters give on Reddit are concrete: paying for features they do not use, a lack of trust in the AI, and AI turning up in every corner of a product (Reddit threads 1vydvxu, 1wiivcd and 1vb5ctu, read September 2026).
The choice is rarely between AI and no AI. For most products it is between AI that runs by default and AI that waits until someone turns it on, and a demo seldom shows which one you are buying.
GrantCue sells one of the products compared here, so every competitor figure below is tied to a public source and the date it was read.
Quick Answer: Is There Grant Software Without AI Features?
Instrumentl, Candid, GrantStation and Blackbaud all describe AI features on their own pages (read September 2026), so the practical test is control. Blackbaud's generative AI stays off until an admin opts in, GrantStation lets members skip its AI search, Candid's opt-out covers AI training, not the features, and Instrumentl's new Discover cannot be reverted once a project switches.
Why Grant Teams Ask for Software Without AI
Commenters who object to AI in grant software give practical reasons: cost, trust, and AI added to tools they chose for other jobs. Across three Reddit threads, explicit complaints about AI features come from seven accounts: three in 1wiivcd, three in 1vb5ctu and one in 1vydvxu (Reddit threads 1wiivcd, 1vb5ctu and 1vydvxu, read September 2026).
Each row is one commenter (Reddit threads 1wiivcd, 1vb5ctu and 1vydvxu, read September 2026).
The commenter who hated "AI integrated into everything" was asking colleagues about Instrumentl and wrote that a board member was asking about it, and that they wanted "a fully formed opinion" (Reddit thread 1wiivcd, read September 2026). In the Candid thread, the commenter who did not need AI to write a letter of inquiry said what they did need: "to be able to download an excel of past relevant grants in my area that I can filter through" (Reddit thread 1vb5ctu, read September 2026). Another commenter there said the old Foundation Directory's functionality "was better than their 'new and improved' AI-driven product" (Reddit thread 1vb5ctu, read September 2026). For that commenter, the AI version was the downgrade.
The objection is not blanket. The commenter who was sick of AI integrations said another vendor's new AI tool "feels a lot less invasive than AI I've seen elsewhere" (Reddit thread 1wiivcd, read September 2026). And one commenter, whose account has since been deleted, said AI-powered grant apps "definitely cut down the time" but added that "you still have to have all your paper work in order or it doesn't work" (Reddit thread 1p511oo, read September 2026). What these commenters want is AI they chose, for a job they asked it to do.

Which Grant Tools Let You Turn AI Off
Vendors' own pages describe four kinds of control: AI that stays off until an admin opts in, AI you can skip, a training opt-out that leaves the features running, and an AI workflow that cannot be undone once a project switches.
Blackbaud describes AI that is off by default: "If you don't opt in, your organization remains opted out by default," and an admin who later disables the features sees the change take "effect immediately" (Blackbaud Help, Opt In to Generative AI Features Globally, read September 2026).
GrantStation keeps its AI search optional. Its member FAQ answers "I don't want to use AI, what can I do?" with: "if you don't want to use the AI search function, you can start right at the search interface, select your criteria, and then save funding opportunities to Projects you create" (GrantStation, New GrantStation Experience, PDF created June 26, 2026).
Candid's control is over training, not features. Its privacy policy says data from its AI-powered services "may be used to train and improve Candid's AI functionality," and that "You have the right to opt out" (Candid privacy policy, last updated September 16, 2026).
Instrumentl's new Discover (beta) "replaces keyword-based project setup with a guided, AI-powered flow," and "Once switched, the project cannot be reverted to the classic setup" (Instrumentl Help, new Discover article, July 17, 2026). For how three of these products compare on search and price, see our Instrumentl, Candid and GrantStation comparison.
Funders choosing grantmaking software meet the same question from the other side. Submittable describes its Smart Reviewer, a funder-side tool that "evaluates applications based on the criteria you set in your Custom Feedback Form," as "currently in Beta," and says "Only organizations that have signed the Beta Agreement can have this feature turned on" (Submittable Next support, updated July 15, 2026). For a funder that does not want AI in review, that makes the feature something to decline, not something to switch off.
What Turning AI Off Does and Does Not Do
Turning AI off stops it from running. It does not necessarily delete what the AI already processed, and it is a separate question from whether your data trains a model.
Blackbaud states the first point directly: "Disabling generative AI features stops AI-driven processing, but it does not remove or delete existing data" (Blackbaud Help, read September 2026). If your concern is data the AI has already touched, ask the vendor how to delete it; at Blackbaud, the off switch does not.
Candid shows the second point. Opting out of training under its privacy policy is a choice about how your data is used; it does not remove the fundraising assistant, which Candid markets to "Draft a letter of inquiry and budget estimate in minutes" (Candid search product page, read September 2026). A team can opt out of training and still have AI features in the product.
Instrumentl's Discover change is the one to plan for, since a switched project stays switched. Switch a single project first, keep the rest on the classic setup, and judge the new flow on real work before you move everything.
Across vendors' own help pages, turning AI off means different things from one vendor to the next. Before you rely on a setting, find out which of three things it controls: whether AI features run, whether your data trains a model, and whether existing AI output is deleted.

Paying for AI Features You Do Not Use
AI can be priced into a plan tier, so part of the buying decision is which plan carries which AI feature, and whether the plan you need costs more because of AI you will not use.
One commenter in a thread about grant-tracking software warned that with Instrumentl "you're gonna be paying for all the other (now AI-driven) features even if you don't use them" (Reddit thread 1vydvxu, read September 2026). Instrumentl's own help page ties its AI writing tool to a tier: Apply "is available starting on the Pre-Award Plan" (Instrumentl Help, May 22, 2026).
One user report suggests at least one product splits AI and non-AI versions outright. A commenter recommending CharityEZ said "The AI version is $42/mo but the non-AI is free" (Reddit thread 1p511oo, read September 2026). CharityEZ's own pricing page lists a free tier beside AI Gold at $497.50 a year, which it describes as a "$41.46/month equivalent" (CharityEZ pricing page, read September 2026), so check which features each tier carries before you plan around it.
Ask each vendor for its feature-by-plan table and read the non-AI rows first. Find the lowest plan that covers the pipeline, deadline and reporting features you need. If the AI features sit only in higher plans, that plan keeps them off your bill; if the plan you need bundles them, you pay for them whether you switch them on or not.
Spreadsheets as the No-AI Option
A spreadsheet tracker is the obvious fallback for a team that wants no AI, but the office suites around spreadsheets now carry AI too, so the same control question applies.
In Google Workspace, "Access to the Gemini app as a core service is turned on by default," and admins "can choose to disable the service" (Google Workspace Privacy Hub, updated August 14, 2026). A team that tracks grants in Google Sheets under a Workspace account should ask its admin where that setting sits. If you build the tracker yourself, our column-by-column tracking spreadsheet gives you the structure.
Finding grants is a separate job from tracking them, and free routes exist for it. Our roundup of free grant research tiers compares them, so you can judge each one's AI features the same way.

AI Questions to Put to a Vendor Before You Buy
Put the same questions to every vendor in writing, and ask for the help page that documents each answer. The answers already on record show how much they differ.
Sources: Blackbaud Help (read September 2026); Candid privacy policy (September 16, 2026); Instrumentl Help (July 17 and May 22, 2026).
A vague answer is an answer too. If a vendor cannot point to a page for a claim about training or off switches, record the claim as unverified and ask again before you sign.
GrantCue is not software without AI, and the same questions apply to it. Its features page lists a NOFO PDF Summarizer, an AI Grant Writing Workspace and Smart Tagging under a separate "AI-Powered" heading that promises "transparent evidence and missing-input disclosures," and AI-generated pre-flight checklists in a section of their own (grantcue.com, October 2026). Its Pipeline Management, Smart Deadline Tracking and Calendar Integration lists contain no AI items, and Task Management has one: generating a task list from the funding notice with AI (grantcue.com, October 2026). The GrantCue features page sets out both groups and notes that "Available features depend on your plan" (grantcue.com, October 2026).
Setting a Team Rule for AI in Grant Software
Whatever you buy, write down how your team will treat its AI features, so the answer to the next board question is a document, not an opinion.
A rule like this fits the situation one grant writer described on Reddit: a board member asking questions, and the writer wanting "a fully formed opinion" (Reddit thread 1wiivcd, read September 2026). One page gives the board the decision, the reasons and the date it was made. A small team's rule might read: AI summaries of funding announcements allowed; AI drafting off; no applicant or staff personal data in any AI feature; the development director reviews every AI output before use; the rule is rechecked each spring.
Revisit the rule when a vendor changes a workflow. Instrumentl's new Discover (beta), which replaces keyword-based project setup with a guided, AI-powered flow, is the kind of change that should trigger a review (Instrumentl Help, July 17, 2026), because a feature your rule marked off may now sit inside a workflow you use every day.
FAQ
Does Candid Use My Data to Train AI?
It can. Candid's privacy policy says data from its AI-powered services "may be used to train and improve Candid's AI functionality," with a right to opt out (Candid privacy policy, last updated September 16, 2026). It also says data passed to its third-party AI providers "will not be used to train and improve the providers' AI models, except when Personal Information was obtained through 990 filings" (Candid privacy policy, last updated September 16, 2026).
Does Blackbaud Train AI on Customer Data?
Blackbaud says no: "Blackbaud does not use customer or organizational data to retrain or improve the underlying model" (Blackbaud Help, read September 2026). Its generative AI features are also opt-in per organization, so an organization that never opts in stays opted out by default. An admin who disables the features later stops the AI processing, though existing data is not deleted.
Can I Skip the AI in GrantStation?
For search, yes. GrantStation's member FAQ says members who do not want AI search can start at the search interface, select criteria and save opportunities to Projects (GrantStation, PDF created June 26, 2026). Its Proposal Reviewer is a tool you use by uploading a Word document or PDF for AI-assisted feedback, under the stance "Use AI as support, not a substitute" (GrantStation member benefits page, read September 2026).
Is There Free Grant Software Without AI?
One commenter on Reddit said of CharityEZ that "The AI version is $42/mo but the non-AI is free" (Reddit thread 1p511oo, read September 2026), and CharityEZ's pricing page lists a free tier beside AI Gold at $497.50 a year (CharityEZ pricing page, read September 2026). A spreadsheet costs nothing extra, but check the suite around it: in Google Workspace the Gemini app is on by default unless an admin disables it (Google Workspace Privacy Hub, updated August 14, 2026).
Do Grant Software Vendors Train AI on Customer Data?
It depends on the vendor. Instrumentl's home page advertises "AI features that never train on your data" (Instrumentl home page, read September 2026). Grantable says "Your content is never used to train AI models" and that its named AI providers, Anthropic and OpenAI, "are contractually prohibited from training on customer data" (Grantable Trust and Security page, read September 2026). Candid's privacy policy allows training with an opt-out (Candid privacy policy, last updated September 16, 2026).
Send the Vendor Questions Before the Demo
Email each vendor your questions on AI defaults, off switches, deletion, training, one-way changes and plan tiers before the first demo, and ask for the help-center page behind every answer. A vendor that answers in writing, with a page you can reread, is giving you something you can hold it to.
Date the answers when they arrive, since vendor help pages carry their own update dates, and file them with your team rule so the two stay in step. Then weigh the AI answers alongside the rest of the evaluation in our guide to choosing nonprofit grant software, so the AI question settles the choice only when the other features are a match.
