Grants for Local Governments

Cities, counties, towns and townships, special districts and, where a program allows, tribal governments are the applicants for the grants on this page. Federal notices name these applicants precisely: Grants.gov treats county governments, city or township governments, special district governments and federally recognized tribal governments as separate eligibility categories.

Read the eligibility section first. A program open to units of local government may still leave out special districts, and some grants accept nonprofits alongside governments while others are for governments only. Many state programs for local governments run through a community affairs or local government department, so that agency's funding page is often where state rounds appear.
