Grants for Libraries
The grants listed here are open to public, school, academic and tribal libraries and to library systems. The largest source of federal funding for library services, the Institute of Museum and Library Services' Grants to States program, sends money to each state library administrative agency by a population-based formula. The state library sets its own priorities and may pass funds on through competitive subawards to public, academic, research, school and special libraries.
That makes the state library a good first stop for a library grant, and its rules decide eligibility; for-profit and federal libraries cannot receive these subawards. A public library may also apply as part of its city or county, or through a Friends of the Library nonprofit, depending on what a funder accepts.
