These 3,385 private foundations did not say they refuse unsolicited applications. On their latest Form 990-PF they left the “preselected organizations only” box unchecked, and the same filing gives at least some application information: who or where to contact, what to send, or deadlines.
Most large private foundations check that box. Check each foundation's current guidelines before you apply. Our 2026 report counts 3,061 of these foundations under a stricter rule; how this list is built explains the difference.
Typical grant is the median of grants reported in the filing data. Application details come from the latest filing and can be out of date, so confirm them with the foundation.

How this list is built
Form 990-PF has a box a foundation checks if it makes contributions only to preselected charitable organizations and does not accept unsolicited requests for funds. It is in Part XIV, Line 2 on returns for tax years 2021 and later (Part XV on older forms). A foundation that leaves the box unchecked is asked to describe how to apply: whom to contact, the form and materials to send, deadlines, and any limits on awards. This list includes each foundation whose most recent electronic filing leaves that box unchecked and fills in at least a contact, the form and materials, or deadlines.
The list is a reading of a filing, not a promise that a foundation is taking applications now. Some entries are brief: a filing may say only that no particular form is required, or give “None” as its deadline. Filings also lag by a year or more, so check the foundation's website or contact it before you apply. How we read the filings is on the methodology page.
Our report Foundation Application Information 2026 uses a stricter rule: it does not count filings whose application lines say only “N/A”, “NONE” or “SEE STATEMENT”. By that rule it counted 3,061 of these foundations in its October 2026 snapshot.
